BACKGROUND HISTORY OF ESAMP

The East Sussex Archaeology and Museums Partnership (ESAMP) was established by East Sussex County Council (ESCC) and the Sussex Archaeology Society in 1984. ESAMP is part of the Environment Group set in East Sussex County Council's Transport and Environment Department.
ESAMP has two main aims:

- To provide training and educational opportunities for the public in partnership with a wide range of environmental and heritage organisations.

- To make the rich environmental, archaeological and cultural heritage of East Sussex accessible to the broader public.

Over the last twenty years ESAMP has developed a network of partnerships with environmental and heritage organisations. These bodies help support and run the training programmes and in turn ESAMP trainees help these organisations to achieve their goals. ESAMP has also won national recognition for the quality of its education and training services. ESAMP has carried out educational and interpretative commissions across Britain and with partners in France.

In 2005 ESAMP was awarded three grade 1’s, for outstanding performance, by the Adult Learning Inspectorate (ALI). The ALI is the government body responsible for inspecting all government funded training for adults in England. ESAMP received grade 1’s for its archaeological and museums based training, its environmental training and for its leadership and management. This places
ESAMP in the top 1% of all training providers nationally. This success is built upon the strong partnerships which ESAMP has developed.
